An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the team at Spetchley Park Gardens

We are looking for an Assistant Head Gardener

Job Summary

Spetchley Park’s beautiful and historic gardens are diverse and complex; their maintenance and development requires the highest standards of horticulture, as well as excellent communication skills. The House and gardens have been the family home of the Berkeley family since 1606.

Under the direction of the Head Gardener, and in line with the vision as directed by the Berkeley Family, the Assistant Head Gardener will strive to improve and develop the horticultural standards and enrich the planting and botanical significance of the gardens, whilst respecting its historic fabric and the care of its plant collections.

We are looking for an amiable, self-motivated person to join our small professional team, who thrives on working in an evolving and friendly atmosphere. You must be competent to perform a comprehensive range of horticultural tasks to an exemplary standard. Excellent gardening experience, plant knowledge and machinery skills are essential. Qualified to a minimum of NVQ level 3 or equivalent. Evidence of managing a team and projects to a budget would be beneficial. A full and clean driving licence and PA1-PA6 spraying license are required. A chainsaw licence would be desirable. The candidate may be required to have an enhanced DBS assessment.

Some aspects of the role are very physically demanding. The role requires working in all weathers and often involves working at height.

The Assistant Head Gardener will understand and promote environmentally sustainable principles and practices in the Gardens, in line with the vision of the Berkeley Family.

The ability to communicate effectively at all levels is essential. You must be open and approachable with excellent organisational skills. You will be a competent skills trainer and provide guidance, supervision and training to ensure the appropriate deployment of volunteers.

The Assistant Head Gardener will, if required, deputise for the Head Gardener and co-ordinate the garden maintenance work, ensuring that Health & Safety procedures are followed at all times. This individual will need to be responsible, reliable and trustworthy.

Hours

Normal working hours are 7.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday and 7.30pm to 3.30pm on a Friday. This role will involve work outside regular hours: there is a weekend and bank holiday watering duty, on a rotational basis and when required by the Head Gardener; and an expectation to attend some events relating to the visitor business at Spetchley Park Gardens.

 Renumeration

The rate of pay will be based on experience - range £28,000.00 - £30,000.00

As an ambassador for Spetchley, you will champion the work of the team and internally and externally promote the care, improvement and development of the gardens.
